Hairpin · Legal
Terms of Use
These terms are the agreement between you and Vector Engineering Kft. when you use Hairpin. They cover the Hairpin apps, the web app at app.hairpinride.com and this website. Please read the safety section: it matters most.
The short version
- Hairpin advises and navigates. You ride, and you decide. Riding safely and legally is your responsibility.
- Map, road and hazard data can be wrong or late. Road signs and the law always come first.
- Your rides are yours. We use them only to run Hairpin for you, and show them to others only when you share them.
- Hairpin is free to use. Pro is an optional subscription you buy through Google Play or the App Store, and renews until you cancel it there.
- Hungarian law applies. Your rights as a consumer stay as they are.

More about the company in the legal notice. In these terms, “we” and “us” mean Vector Engineering Kft., and “you” means the person using Hairpin.
What Hairpin is. Hairpin is a motorcycle navigation and riding coach service: you plan routes, navigate them, record your rides, read back every corner with advice on what to work on and, if you like, ride with friends and share your rides and routes. It comes as an app for Android (on Google Play, and as an installation file we publish ourselves) and for iPhone (on the App Store), and as a web app. A RaceBox is optional extra hardware; Hairpin works with your phone alone.
Our licence to you. You may use the Hairpin apps and web app for your own riding, for as long as these terms apply to you. The software, the brand, the analysis and the texts stay ours (or our licensors’). You may not copy, sell or hand on the service, and you may not take it apart except where the law lets you do so regardless. For business use (for example a riding school), please write to us first.
Hairpin gives advice about your riding. It does not replace training, a licence, or common sense.
2. Your account
- Age. Hairpin is for riders aged 16 and over, as in the privacy notice. If you are under 18, you may buy Pro only with the consent of your parent or other legal representative.
- Signing up. You need an account, made with your email address, which you confirm by a link we send. Give us true details and keep them up to date. One account is for one person.
- How the agreement is made. The agreement between you and us is made electronically when your account is created, in English or Hungarian. We do not file it as a separate document, and it does not count as a contract made in writing: these terms are always on this page, where you can save or print them. You can correct your details before you send the sign-up form, and later in your profile.
- New accounts. We may check a new account before it opens, for example while sign-ups are limited. We tell you by email when yours is ready.
- Keeping it safe. Keep your password to yourself and tell us at once if you think someone else is using your account. You answer for your own use of the account and, as the law provides, for loss caused by not keeping your sign-in safe; you do not answer for everything someone else does with it without your fault.
3. Safety: you ride, you decide
Please read this section before you ride with Hairpin.
- Riding is your responsibility. How you ride, which road you take, what you wear, the state of your motorcycle and whether you ride at all are your decisions. Hairpin gives suggestions; it does not take over any of them.
- Do not use the phone while riding. Mount it firmly, set up before you start, and stop in a safe place to change anything. Use the voice cues rather than the screen, keep your eyes on the road, and follow the law on using a phone on a vehicle.
- The data can be wrong or late. Routes, turn instructions, speed limits, speed cameras, hazards, road closures and roadworks, road surface and roughness, places proposed by riders, and whether a track is legal to ride all come from OpenStreetMap, public feeds, other riders and our own analysis. They can be missing, out of date or simply wrong. Not seeing a warning does not mean there is no hazard.
- Signs and the law come first. If Hairpin says one thing and a road sign, a closure, a police officer or the road itself says another, follow them, not the app.
- Speed camera warnings. In some countries it is illegal to use warnings about speed cameras, or to carry a device that gives them. Find out the rules wherever you ride, and switch these alerts off where they are not allowed. We cannot know which rules apply to you.
- Offroad. A track that Hairpin treats as open may be closed locally, private or protected, and local rules change. Forests, national parks and protected areas have their own rules. Check the signs and the local regulations; you answer for where you ride.
- Ride within your limits. Corner verdicts, lean angles and speeds are advice on technique drawn from sensor data. They do not tell you what is safe on the day. Do not ride faster to chase a number; use a closed road or a track day if you want to push.
- Fuel and range. The fuel check is an estimate. Plan your fuel, especially offroad or abroad.
- Group rides and Follow my ride. The other riders' dots, quick messages and safety alerts depend on each phone, its battery, its GPS and its mobile signal. A missing dot or a missing alert does not mean everyone is fine, and nobody at Hairpin watches them. Agree with your group what to do if someone falls behind.
- Not an emergency service. Hairpin never calls the emergency services, and it is not a way to reach them. A crash alert is a help, not a guarantee: the phone can miss a crash, or raise an alarm when nothing happened. In a group ride an alert reaches only the other riders of that ride. In the Android app we publish ourselves you can also switch on crash alerts by text message: if, while you record, the phone feels a hard impact followed by stillness, it counts down 45 seconds and, unless you cancel, texts your position to the emergency contact you chose, from your phone. Nobody at Hairpin receives or watches these alerts.
- Phones fail. Batteries run down, heat and cold make phones slow or switch off, and recording can stop. Do not depend on Hairpin as your only way of finding the way.
4. Your rides, your content and sharing
- They are yours. You keep whatever rights you have in your rides, routes, places and everything else you put into Hairpin; these terms take none of them from you. Data that comes from others (map data, routes you import) stays under its own rights.
- What we may do with them. To run Hairpin for you we need a licence to your content. You give us a worldwide, non-exclusive, free licence to store, copy and process it, and to show it to you, for as long as we hold it: for example to compute your corners and statistics, make a share card or GPX file when you ask for one, keep backups, and send a summary of a ride to our AI provider when you use AI analysis. We do not use your rides for advertising and we do not sell them. The licence ends when you delete the content, apart from backups, which expire within 30 days.
- Sharing in Hairpin. When you share a ride or a route by link, ride in a group, or make a Follow my ride link, you ask us to show that content to the people you share it with, in the way the privacy notice describes, and the licence above covers that too. You can stop a link, leave a group ride or stop a Follow my ride link at any time; what others have already seen, or a copy of a route they planned for themselves, stays with them.
- Places you propose. When you propose a place for the map, you give us a free, non-exclusive, worldwide licence, without time limit, to review it, correct or shorten it, show it to every Hairpin rider as part of the map, and keep it there after your account is deleted, without your name. Propose only places that exist, with information that is true and that you may share. This licence does not touch anyone’s rights over their personal data: if a place names you or someone else, write to us and we take that out.
- Sharing outside Hairpin. A share card or GPX file is yours to send where you like. Once it has left Hairpin, it is outside our control.
- What you may upload. Only files you have the right to use. Trans Euro Trail files and other trails you import stay on your phone and are not uploaded; keep them under their publisher’s terms.
- Deleting. You can delete a ride, or your whole account, at any time (Settings → Account → Delete account in the app, Profile → Delete account on the web, or by email). Deleting your account removes your data as the privacy notice says. It does not cancel a Pro subscription: you cancel that in the store.
- Personal data. How we handle personal data, and your rights over it, are set out in the privacy notice.
5. AI analysis
- What it is. The AI analysis writes a debrief of a ride and answers your questions about it; for a Pro rider it also names, automatically, a new ride that has no name. The text is generated by an AI model from a compact summary of your ride. AI analysis is part of Pro: it is on while you have Pro, within the limits below. We may switch it off for an account that misuses it (section 7).
- It can be wrong. It may misread a ride, miss something or sound surer than it should. It is advice about technique, not a safety assessment, and nothing is decided about you automatically from it. See section 3.
- Limits. AI use is limited. To keep the service affordable, it is capped per ride, per day and per month for each rider, and there is a monthly limit across the whole service, so AI can pause for everyone until the month ends even before you reach your own limit. The app shows when a limit is reached and when it resets. We may change the limits, or stop an AI feature, as section 6 allows.
- What is sent. Which data goes to our AI provider is described in the privacy notice. Do not put anything into a question that you do not want sent there.
6. Free and Pro
What you get
Hairpin is free to use with a Free plan: recording and uploading rides, the ride page with its basics, the three corners most worth working on in each ride, planning and navigating routes in Fast mode with as many stops as you like, a few saved routes, your garage and saved places, friends, share links and joining group rides. Hairpin Pro adds more, for example the analysis of every corner and its history, all ride statistics, comparing rides, AI analysis, Balanced and Twisty planning, round trips, speed camera and speed limit alerts, offline maps and routing, offroad and Hairpin Trail, GPX import and export, more map styles and layers, unlimited saved routes, recording with a RaceBox, creating and leading group rides, and Follow my ride. The current list is on the Pro screen in the app.
Buying Pro
- Through the store. Pro is a subscription you buy in the Hairpin app through the billing of Google Play or the App Store. The store takes the payment, issues the receipt and handles renewals, cancellation and refunds, under its own terms, which also say what role the store has in the sale. We provide Pro itself, under these terms, and your rights against us stay the same whatever the store’s role. Pro cannot be bought on the web, from us directly, or in the Android app we publish ourselves.
- Price. The price, the billing period (monthly or yearly) and the taxes are shown in the store before you confirm.
- We never see your card details. Google or Apple charges you and handles the receipt.
- It renews until you cancel. Your subscription renews automatically for the same period at the then-current price, until you cancel it in the store’s subscription settings. You can cancel up to the end of the current period; as the store may charge for the next period up to a day before it starts, cancel at least 24 hours before to be sure. Deleting the app, or your Hairpin account, does not cancel it. After you cancel, you keep Pro until the end of the period you paid for.
- Price changes. If the price goes up, the store tells you and, where the law or the store’s rules require it, asks for your consent before the new price applies.
- One account. A subscription unlocks Pro for the one Hairpin account it was bought with. It cannot be shared between accounts. Pro belongs to your account, not to a phone: signed in with that account, you have Pro on Android, on iPhone and on the web. Moving to a phone that uses the other store, you do not need to subscribe again; if you would rather pay in the other store, cancel the old subscription first, so that you are not charged twice.
Refunds and your right to withdraw
- Refunds. Because the store sells Pro, refund requests go to the store, under its rules: for Google Play, support.google.com/
googleplay/ ; for the App Store, support.apple.com/answer/ 2479637 118223 . If a refund is due to you by law, for example because Pro did not work as promised, and the store does not give it, write to support@hairpinride.com and we will put it right, if need be by refunding you ourselves. - Withdrawal in the EU. If you live in the EU and buy as a consumer, you can withdraw from a Pro subscription within 14 days of buying it, without giving a reason (Directive 2011/83/EU; in Hungary, Government Decree 45/2014. (II. 26.)). Pro starts as soon as the store confirms the purchase. If you expressly asked for it to start within those 14 days, you pay only for the days you had Pro before you withdrew; if you were not asked for this, you pay nothing for them.
- How to withdraw. Within the 14 days, either use the store’s refund request (the links above), or send us a clear statement at support@hairpinride.com, for example: “I withdraw from my Hairpin Pro subscription bought on [date] in [Google Play / the App Store]. My account’s email address: [address].” No form is needed, and sending it within the 14 days is enough. The money goes back the way you paid. If the store has not refunded you within 14 days of your statement reaching us, we refund you ourselves.
- If Pro does not work as promised. You have the remedies the law gives for a digital service that does not conform to the contract: depending on the case, having it put right free of charge and, where the legal conditions are met, a proportionate price reduction or ending the contract with the refund the law requires. Tell us at support@hairpinride.com. The store’s procedures do not limit the rights you have against us, and nothing here touches your other statutory rights.
Changes to Free and Pro
- Features may change or move. We may add features, change what Free and Pro include, or move a feature from one to the other, for a valid reason: to keep Hairpin safe and lawful, to follow new technology or the stores’ rules, because the cost or the terms of the data and services Hairpin relies on (for example AI) change, to stop misuse, or to add or rework features. A change never costs you more during a period you have paid for.
- If a change makes Pro worse for you. If a change makes Pro worse for you in more than a minor way, we tell you by email, clearly and at least 30 days before it applies, what changes and when. You may then end your subscription free of charge within 30 days of our message or of the change, whichever is later, and we refund the part of the price that covers the rest of the period: through the store where it lets us, otherwise ourselves.
- Your data stays. Moving from Pro to Free never deletes anything by itself: your rides, routes, trails and analyses stay, as the privacy notice says. Some Pro actions, such as opening every corner, planning in Twisty, or exporting GPX, stay locked until you are on Pro again; what you have already stored remains yours.
Pro from us
We may give testers, early riders or others Pro without a subscription, for a period or without an end date. Such access is a gift, not a purchase. We may end it, with notice where that is reasonable, and then the account returns to the Free plan with all its data.
7. Using Hairpin properly
Please do not:
- break the law with the help of Hairpin, or use it to plan or encourage illegal riding such as racing or stunts on public roads;
- record, follow or look up another person’s location without their agreement, for example through a group ride or a Follow my ride link, or pass on someone else’s link or content beyond the people it was meant for;
- harass other riders, or put offensive, false or misleading names, titles or notes into Hairpin;
- propose places that do not exist, advertising, or someone else’s personal data;
- attack, overload or probe the service, scrape it, or get round its limits, locks or plan checks, for example with a modified app;
- upload content that is unlawful or that you have no right to use, or use someone else’s account;
- resell Hairpin, or offer it to others as your own.
Reporting content. If you find a place, a shared ride or route, or anything else in Hairpin that you think is illegal or breaks these terms, tell us at support@hairpinride.com: the link, or where it is in Hairpin; why you think it is illegal or breaks these terms; your name and email address; and that you believe your report is accurate and complete. We confirm that we received it, look at every report carefully and without undue delay, and tell you what we decided and how you can ask us to look at it again. People decide on reports, not automated tools. Places proposed by riders are reviewed before other riders see them.
What we may do. If content or an account breaks these terms or the law, we may remove or hide the content, switch off a feature for the account (such as AI or proposing places), or limit or close the account (section 11). We tell the person concerned what we did and why, unless the law forbids it, and they can ask us to look at it again by writing to support@hairpinride.com.
Point of contact. Our point of contact for riders and authorities, including under the EU Digital Services Act, is support@hairpinride.com, in English or Hungarian.
8. Third-party data and the app stores
- OpenStreetMap. Map data © OpenStreetMap contributors, available under the Open Database Licence (openstreetmap.org/copyright). Routes, speed limits, speed cameras and many hazards are derived from it. If you reuse such data, credit OpenStreetMap as the licence requires.
- GeoNames. Place names in corner references outside our map region come from GeoNames, under CC BY 4.0.
- Maps and imagery. Map styles, terrain and satellite images, elevation, weather and road closure feeds come from other providers and are credited on each map and in the privacy notice. Their own terms apply to their data.
- Trans Euro Trail. Trans Euro Trail files you import stay on your phone, under their publisher’s terms.
- RaceBox. RaceBox is a trademark of its owner, and Hairpin is not affiliated with it. A RaceBox is bought and supported separately.
- The stores. You get Hairpin from Google Play or the App Store, and the store’s own terms apply to your purchases and downloads. Google and Apple are not parties to these terms, have no duty to support Hairpin, and are not responsible for it.
- If you use Hairpin on iPhone. Apple’s standard licence agreement for apps (the “Licensed Application End User License Agreement”) applies alongside these terms; where the two differ on matters that agreement covers, Apple’s applies. You and we acknowledge that these terms are between you and us, not Apple. Apple has no duty to provide maintenance or support. If the app does not meet a warranty that applies, you may tell Apple, and Apple will refund the price of the app if it was paid for. As far as the law allows, Apple has no other warranty duty. We, not Apple, answer for your claims about Hairpin and for any claim that it infringes someone’s intellectual property. You confirm that you are not in a country under a US embargo or on a US list of prohibited parties. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms for your use of Hairpin on iPhone and may enforce them against you once you accept them.
9. The service and changes to it
- Availability. We work to keep Hairpin running and useful, but we cannot promise it will always be available, free of errors or complete; this does not limit our duty that Pro conforms to the contract (section 6). Many features need an internet connection, and outages of other services (map data, routing, weather, the app stores) can affect Hairpin.
- Changes. We keep improving Hairpin, so we may change it, add to it or take parts away, for the valid reasons listed in section 6. We will tell you in the app or by email about a change that makes your use worse in a way that matters, and before it applies where that is practical; for Pro, section 6 applies. Keep the app updated; very old versions may stop working.
- New features. A feature marked as new, beta or early access may be rough and may change quickly.
- Changes to these terms. We may change these terms for a valid reason: a change in the law or in a decision of an authority or court, in the stores’ rules, in Hairpin’s features or in the services it relies on, or to make them clearer. We post the new text here and tell you in the app or by email at least 30 days before it applies to you. If you do not agree, you can end the agreement at no cost before that date, by deleting your account or by writing to support@hairpinride.com that you end it (we then delete the account, after you have had the chance to get a copy of your data), and by cancelling Pro in the store; and we refund the part of a Pro period you paid for and can no longer use. If you carry on using Hairpin after that date, the new terms apply. A change that is only to your advantage, or that the law requires at once, may apply sooner.
10. Liability
- What no term can change. Nothing in these terms excludes or limits our liability where the law does not allow that (in particular the Hungarian Civil Code). Whatever the law allows, we do not limit it for harm we cause intentionally, by gross negligence or by a criminal act, for harm to life, body or health, or under product liability rules. Nor does anything here limit your rights as a consumer if a digital service does not conform to the contract.
- Free and Pro alike. Apart from that, we are liable under Hungarian law if we breach our agreement with you. For loss other than in the service itself, and for lost profit, we are liable only to the extent that we could foresee it as a possible consequence of the breach when the agreement was made. The same rules apply whether you use Hairpin free or with Pro.
- Your riding decisions. You decide how and where you ride (section 3). We are not liable for loss that comes from your own riding decisions or from breaking traffic rules, or from errors in data from other sources (such as OpenStreetMap, public feeds or places proposed by other riders) that we pass on in good faith and could not reasonably check, unless we caused or contributed to the loss by breaching our duties under these terms or under the law. The first point above always applies.
- Your own copy. If you want your own copy of your rides, export them as GPX files (a Pro feature) or ask us for a copy of your data, as the privacy notice describes.
11. Ending the agreement
- You can stop using Hairpin and end the agreement at any time, by deleting your account (section 4) or by writing to support@hairpinride.com that you end it. To stop paying for Pro, cancel in the store (section 6).
- We may limit, suspend or close an account for a serious breach of these terms, for abuse or a security risk, or if the law requires it, and we tell you why unless the law forbids it. Where a breach can be put right, we first ask you to stop. If we close an account with a paid Pro period for a reason that is not your fault, we refund the unused part.
- If we stop offering Hairpin, or Pro, altogether, we tell you at least 30 days before. We stop the subscription from renewing, and we refund the unused part of any Pro period you paid for: through the store where it lets us, otherwise ourselves. Until the end you can download your data or ask us for a copy.
- When the agreement ends, sections that by their nature carry on (such as liability, and law and complaints) carry on too.
12. Law, complaints and consumer rights
- Governing law. Hungarian law governs these terms. If you are a consumer, you keep the protection that the mandatory rules of the country where you live give you, and you may bring a claim in the courts of that country.
- Complaints. Please write to support@hairpinride.com first; we want to put it right. We answer a written complaint in writing, with our reasons, within 30 days.
- Conciliation board. If we cannot settle it, a consumer may turn to a conciliation board (békéltető testület) in Hungary: the one for where you live or stay, or the one for our registered office, which is the Conciliation Board of Fejér County (Fejér Vármegyei Békéltető Testület): 8000 Székesfehérvár, Hosszúsétatér 4–6. (postal: H-8050 Székesfehérvár, Pf. 357), +36 22 510-310, bekeltetes@fmkik.hu, bekeltetesfejer.hu. We take part in its procedure.
- Authorities and courts. You can also turn to the consumer protection authority (in Hungary, the government office of your county or of Budapest) or go to court. If you live in another EU country, the European Consumer Centre there can help with a complaint across borders.
- Business users. If you are not a consumer, Hungarian law applies and disputes go to the court competent for our registered office.
- Languages. These terms are in English and Hungarian, and both texts carry the same weight. If they differ, the meaning more favourable to you as a consumer applies.
- If a part of these terms turns out to be invalid, the rest stays in force.
